Bora Bora Braids aftercare (Smedium Mid-Back) With 100% Human Hair
By Empress Beauty Braids | October 17, 2026
Quick reminder: Your #1 rule is simple: keep your Bora Bora Braids dry for the first 24 to 48 hours. That one step cuts down early frizz and helps your set stay neat, which matters in Chicago when you’re going back out into wind, coats, and hat season.
We do a lot of protective styles at Empress Beauty Braids here in West Humboldt Park, and Bora Bora Braids (smedium, mid-back) with 100% human hair are one of those looks that stays beautiful when you keep the first few weeks simple. Our team is big on clean parting and neat work, and your aftercare is what keeps that “fresh” look, especially if you’re commuting around the West Side, wearing layers, and dealing with Chicago fall and winter air.
The first 24 to 48 hours: let the braids set before you do anything extra
Right after your install, your scalp and your braid base need a minute to settle. We generally recommend three things in those first 24 to 48 hours:
- Skip water and steam (no wash day, no long hot showers with your hair uncovered). Moisture at the roots too soon is the fastest way to raise frizz.
- Go easy on sweating. If you’re doing high-intensity workouts, turn it down for 48 to 72 hours when you can. If you do sweat, pat your scalp and hairline dry with a clean towel and let everything fully air-dry.
- No tight ponytails or pulling. Your edges should never feel “worked.” Keep it down or do a loose low style so the braid bases stay calm.
Sleep setup on night one matters more than people think
Cover your hair with a satin or silk scarf, or use a satin bonnet. If you move a lot in your sleep, add a satin pillowcase too. Friction is what makes braids look fuzzy early, especially around the hairline.
Chicago tip: If you’re stepping out in wind or cold, put your scarf or bonnet on first, then your hood or hat. That one layer cuts down friction on short West Side walks and keeps your hairline neater.
Week 1: clean scalp, light hands, and no pool plans yet
Once you’re past that first 48 hours, you can start a gentle routine. We like to keep week 1 simple because it’s the easiest way to make your install last and keep your own hair in good shape underneath.
How to wash braids without blowing them up
Start light cleansing in week 1. Use a sulfate-free shampoo diluted with water in an applicator bottle, or use a braid cleansing spray made for the scalp. Apply it to your scalp only, then massage gently with your fingertips. Rinse by letting water flow down the braids, not by roughing them up.
Frequency depends on your scalp. Most people do well with cleansing every 1 to 2 weeks. If you’re oilier or you work out a lot, you’ll usually land closer to the 1-week mark.
Swimming rules (especially for human hair braids)
We recommend avoiding chlorinated pools and salt water for at least 2 weeks. If you have to be in the water, protect your braids with a swim cap. After, rinse as soon as you can and make sure your braids dry completely. Human hair can hold water longer than you think, and staying damp too long can make your scalp unhappy.
If you’re itchy: Don’t scratch with nails or pick at your parts. Use a light scalp oil or braid spray, then press your fingertips on the itchy spot for 10 seconds. It calms the feeling without loosening your braid base.
Products that actually help Bora Bora Braids stay neat (and what to keep off your hair)
The goal with Bora Bora Braids aftercare is moisture without buildup. Heavy products sit on the braid, grab lint, and make the style look older faster.
Light scalp moisture (2 to 3 times a week)
Use a lightweight oil or a braid spray right at the scalp. Focus on your perimeter and the nape. If your scalp is dry in Chicago winter, you may need a little more often, but keep the product light.
Braid length care (weekly)
Smooth a small amount of lightweight leave-in on the mid-lengths and ends. With 100% human hair, less is more. You want soft and controlled, not coated.
What to avoid
Skip heavy butters, thick edge waxes, and anything sticky. And don’t use heat tools on the braided length unless you’ve checked in with us first. Heat plus product buildup is where human hair braid extensions can start acting up.
Hat season reminder: Knit hats can rough up your braid surface and hairline. If you wear one daily, line it with satin or put a satin scarf on underneath. Your braids stay neater, and your edges stay calmer.
When to text us for a quick check or touch-up in West Humboldt Park
A little tightness on day one can be normal, but pain isn’t. If your scalp feels like it’s throbbing, you see bumps forming, or your edges feel stressed, let us know right away. We’d rather fix a small issue early than have you trying to “push through” it.
We also do quick touch-up help for West Humboldt Park clients who want their hairline refreshed or need help adjusting their maintenance routine, especially during Chicago winter when hats and dry air can make braids look older faster.

How long to keep mid-back Bora Bora Braids in, and how to take them down safely
Most people keep mid-back Bora Bora Braids in until the new growth feels heavy, the scalp is getting itchy no matter what you do, or the braids are slipping, it’s usually time. Leaving braids in too long can cause tangling at the root and extra shedding on takedown, even when the install was perfect.
When you’re ready to remove them, take your time. Cut only where you’re 100% sure your natural hair isn’t. Detangle your roots in sections as you go, then follow up with a gentle cleanse and deep condition. If you want, we can talk you through a takedown plan so you don’t lose progress.
